2012 was a big year for Future, with the runaway success of his singles “Same Damn Time” and “Turn On the Lights,” and 2013 looks to be even bigger. Everyone in the game right now seems to want his druggy, demented, Auto-Tuned presence on at least one of their songs, and despite the fact that he works with a very particular sonic formula it hasn’t come close to getting old yet. His spot on Rihanna’s “Loveeee Song” has made that track the sleeper hit from Unapolgetic, and the controversy over Lil Wayne’s unfortunate reference to Emmett Till on the remix of “Karate Chop” has completely overshadowed how incredible the song is, and how it seems to represent a new chapter of Future’s career where he completely dispenses with using recognizable English words.
The primary credit on the new single “Bugatti” goes to Ace Hood, but Future’s bizarro presence is very much at the song’s center, adding a hallucinatory edge to Ace’s visions of obscene wealth. Produced by the ascendant hit-maker Mike Will Made It (who’s also responsible for “Turn On the Lights,” the song also boasts a verse by Rick Ross and its video features cameos by Cash Money chairman Baby and sui generis hip-hop personality DJ Khaled.
