Back in April, I reported that when San Francisco’s Blasted Canyons arrived home from this year’s SXSW, they immediately broke up. Turns out they weren’t the only ones: Castle Face labelmates the Mallard called it day once they got home from tour as well, which was a bummer because they were a band who were always awesome, and judging by the shows of theirs I had seen in Austin, they were only getting better. In an interview with SF Weekly, front woman Greer McGettrick said a large factor in the band’s breakup was a mix of burnout and disillusionment. “I felt really burnt out on not only my songs, but music altogether,” she said. Maybe we’ll get a chance to see them reunite at Riot Fest 2023? Luckily, we still get the Mallard’s final testament: Castle Face is releasing their last album, Finding Meaning in Deference, at the end of July. Yesterday the world got its first taste of the posthumous LP—and as expected, it’s really great. Today’s 12 O’Clock Track is that preview, “Crystals & Candles.”
