One of my favorite stories about the time I spent hanging out in Detroit is about the time I was riding in a friend’s car and we flagrantly blew a red light doing about 65 or so right in front of a cop and he didn’t do a damn thing. Police in Detroit generally don’t give a shit about you unless you are shooting people or setting something fairly large on fire. That state of relative anarchy is the payoff you expect for living in a bombed-out, crime-infested urban crater like Detroit, and one of the city’s better qualities.

Detroit is a dangerous-ass city. There’s an insane amount of crime everywhere in the city, much of it violent. And as the Freep notes, “even Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick acknowledges” that the police department is significantly understaffed,” which makes diverting police attention towards victimless crimes like this ridiculous, maybe even dangerous.
