Back in July, record shop Logan Hardware left its original spot near the corner of Western and Fullerton and moved a few blocks west to a corner storefront at 2532 W. Fullerton. While the new spot lacks some of the charm and all of the history of the old spot, which once served as the U.S. distribution headquarters for UK label Southern, the new spot has significantly more floor space and room to breathe. That’s clutch when you want to spend at least an hour or two digging through seven-inches, and whenever I sift through the shop’s collection of used records I inevitably end up spending more time there than I ever anticipated.
Still Music honcho and Chicago DJ Jerome Derradji is helping throw the in-store, which starts at 6 PM. Warren and Garcia played a Kill Yourself Dancing release party at the Mayne Stage last month, and I heard they spent the performance editing classic house and disco tracks on the fly—I imagine they’ll do the same at Logan Hardware, which billed the show as a live production set. It’s also the first of several in-stores at the record shop; on Sat 11/23 Chicago fixture and former Sun Ra Arkestra member Phil Cohran will play and do a Q&A to support a new reissue of his 1968 album, On the Beach; on Sat 12/7 “Alabama Love Man” Ralph “Soul” Jackson performs; and on Sat 12/14 bounce originator Ricky B makes his first live appearance in Chicago behind Sinking City and Urban Unrest’s 2013 compilation, B Is for Bounce: New Orleans Rap Classics 1994-95.
