Yuppies are a garagey indie-rock band from Omaha, Nebraska, and they play two shows in Chicago tonight while on tour in support of their excellent, freshly released, self-titled LP. The record came out last month on Dull Tools Records, a label run by Andrew Savage of Parquet Courts, which is funny because Yuppies share endless sonic similarities to Courts. Not that this is a bad thing, by any means—both bands are undeniably great. The new Yuppies record is full of jumpy, hooky, oddball pop gems, heavy on dynamics and sharp, obtuse guitar leads. My favorite part of Yuppies is the vocals: deadpan and wry, delivered in a weird, disinterested, disconnected talk-sing. The entire record walks the fine line between catchy and weird, swaying into both realms multiple times per track. This can lead to an almost fractured, unsure vibe at times, but one thing is for sure: Yuppies never, ever gets boring. It’s been constantly replaying for me lately.
