During the school year, 826CHI offers students writing education and one-on-one tutoring. The nonprofit, founded by McSweeney’s editor Dave Eggers and profiled in the Reader‘s fall 2005 books issue, aims to replace the writing instruction increasingly wrung out of public school lesson plans. This summer, the Wicker Park center will host free writing workshops for students 6-18 in its storefront office at 1331 N. Milwaukee. Registration’s required, and some classes are already full. Here’s a taste of what’s still available:
Art criticism: sculpture: The first of two Saturday workshops will meet at David Weinberg Gallery, where students will see the work of four sculptors and hear from a critic and a curator. The second session meets at the 826CHI office. Saturdays, July 12-19, 1-3 PM, open to students entering grades 4-8. Offered again July 31-August 7.
